Sometimes it's just too hectic to think about planning a "Try Something New Friday" event. You're tired, you've been busy all week but you still want a fun family event to end your week. This is something that takes a phone call or two...inviting friends to meet you at your favorite ice cream shop!
Explain to everyone attending that they may not order anything they have ordered before...they need to "Try Something New". A different flavor, a new popsicle, a different topping...it all qualifies as "new".
Do you ever get in a rut? At a resturant, you ALWAYS order the same dish. Going to work, you ALWAYS drive the same way. At home, you ALWAYS serve Taco's on Tuesday. Well, I want to encourage you to change things up...do something different...it's good for you.
There are reports that if there is a stain on your carpet, you'll notice it the first time you pass it, you'll still notice it the 2nd, 3rd and 4th time but after that, it's bearly noticable to you any more. Think about how much of God's creation you pass by every day and take for granted, ignore basically. What a shame! Take time to enjoy...walk around the neighborhood just to get the mail...enjoy the beauty of the flowers, notice the leaves on the tree, stop and watch the birds flit around.
Take a break from your normal routine. Try Something New!
How Try Something New got started
In an effort to entertain my children as well as have a little fun myself, I came up with the idea of Try Something New Friday in which we get together with friends and neighbors and we try something new. This blog will keep you up to date on what we are currently "trying" as well as what we've done in the past...enjoy!!

Giving kids Mountain Dew...?
With a few kids gone to camp, we are skipping our normal Try Something New Fridays until everyone is back in town but I wanted to tell you about some TSN Friday's that we've already done...and loved!!

I have given talks to a few Mom's groups and encouraged other Moms to try this with their kids. A friend of mine brought this idea home and when talked about things they could try, her husband came up with this one...Trying all the different types of Mt. Dew.
Who knew there were enough Mt. Dew flavors that you could practically make a rainbow!!
You can buy the 20 oz. bottles at the grocery store in the impulse-buy cold refrigerator at the front of the store or at gas stations. You only need one bottle of each flavor!
We invited the neighbors over, poured the pretty drinks and we tried all the different flavors. The kids were very excited that they were able to try the pop they were normally not able to drink due to the caffeine content. After each drink, we rated it on a scale of 1-10...1 being worst and 10 being best. The kids loved being able to have their own opinion of what they liked and disliked...it was fun to see what everyone loved best. Some of the kids liked the blue/purple ones and loved that they were able to finish off the bottle of the ones they liked the best.
After we were done, we went swimming to burn off all the energy we had...a fun time, trying something we would have never tried on our own...sharing our opinions.

Trying Strawberries
We made a trip to Huhn's Strawberry Farm in Eagle, MI and found out that there are several different types of Strawberries! Some are better for making jam, some are sweet for just eating, some are more sour and best with some sugar on a tart! This was a perfect place to "Try Something New!" (even if it was Monday!)
So 2 of my daughters and I spent an hour on a summer morning picking these beautiful strawberries. Each of us took a different section to pick in and we came home with 6 different types of strawberries to try!

We called our neighbors and some friends and gave them a meeting time and got to work! We washed them all, keeping them all seperate and then gave everyone a plate that looked like this...
Then made a sheet with all the names of the strawberries on the top, all the names of the people trying down the side and everyone was given the opportunity to rate the taste based on a 1-6 scale...1 being best, 6 being worst.
Here's the official "Try Something New-Strawberries" event. The least favorite was the strawberry called "Big Idea" which was a big sour-but we tried it without the sugar-after adding the sugar, they were much better! The favorite of the day was the Earligrow-a small, sweet strawberry.
A big thanks to Huhn Strawberry Farm for the delicious strawberries and their patience as we took time to keep all the different varieties seperated! Check them out at www.huhnstrawberryfarm.com but go quickly...they are almost done picking!!
